MayWorks: ‘Labor’s Got Talent’ May 16, video contest entries due
This Friday is also the deadline for the MayWorks amateur video contest. Prizes from $250 to $100 will be awarded to the top three videos, and they will be shared at a special presentation at the MayWorks wrap-up event on May 31. Submit your 3- to 5-minute video entries on the theme of “We Do The Work” — including the film’s title, filmmaker’s name and union affiliation — to Kamaria Hightower, c/o Washington State Labor Council, 314 1st Ave. West, Seattle, WA, 98119. Entries can be submitted electronically via email but must be in a form that can be transferred to DVD for screenings. (Check out last year’s video contest winners.)

SATURDAY, MAY 17 — AFT Washington is excited about building bridges with our upcoming labor and community “Solidarity Event” from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 17 at the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall. The union is partnering with a national nonprofit called First Book to host AFT Washington Celebrates Books and Reading. Get details.
SUNDAY, MAY 18 — Join the Hillman City neighborhood kids’ concert at The Collaboratory, 5623 Rainier Avenue S. in Seattle, on Sunday, May 18 from 1 to 3 p.m. This participatory program honoring the legacy of Pete Seeger. Get details.
MONDAY, MAY 19 — “Does she work harder for the money? The role of gender in income inequality” will be Monday, May 19 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Town Hall Seattle’s Great Hall, 1119 8th Avenue. (Enter on 8th Avenue.) Join Anna Greenberg, Saru Jayaraman and Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner for a lively discussion on income inequality, gender, and work — from the impact of tipping to the changing landscape of male and female earning power. WEDNESDAY, MAY 21 — Apprenticeship Fair for Job Seekers and Students will be Wednesday, May 21 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. at the Georgetown campus of South Seattle Community College (Building C), 6737 Corson Ave S. in Seattle. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about training and job opportunities in a variety of building and construction trades. Click for details.
THURSDAY, MAY 22 — See the film “Inequality for All,” join in discussion on income inequality in the U.S., eat popcorn, and hear the Labor Chorus — all for free! — from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 22 at the School of Social Work, 4101 15th Ave. NE, Room 305. The evening will culminate a month-long series of talks at the SSW exploring the connections between labor rights and economic justice for immigrants, people of color, and low-income families. THURSDAY, MAY 22 — A reception for the art exhibit “Help Wanted: Digital Art about Labor by UW Tacoma Students” will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 22 at the The Hillman City Collaboratory, 5623 Rainier Ave. S. in Seattle. The exhibit is open there daily M-F 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the month of May. At the May 22 reception, there will be a discussion of the work facilitated by teaching artist, Beverly Naidus.
